Ragging

A Bihari student was allegedly so badly ragged in Scindia school that he attempted suicide.
In my opinion ragging is a shameful practice, and must be stopped. It must be understood that a new student in an institution is normally scared and apprehensive as he has come into a new environment. At that time he needs emotional support and help from his seniors, who should tell him not to worry about anything, and give him all help and advice so that he can adjust in the new environment. They should act like elder brothers, and be especially kind and helpful during his early days when he has come into a new environment. Instead, ragging is a cruel practice, which can totally demoralize a sensitive new student, and even drive him to attempt suicide.
We need not ape all practices of the British, particularly when it is bad, like ragging

  2. I agree with you with everything you have said except with your reference to “British”. I am sorry to say, but I think that reference to British in ascribing the origin of ragging is inappropriate. I cannot claim about history nor about the present practices in UK but as I have lived in Australia and say for sure that ragging does not exist in Australia. Australia is a predominantly a British society therefore I can fairly assume that ragging, if happened in Britain in the long past, must have been obsolete now perhaps from a long period of time. Most Australians do not even know the meaning of the word ragging. This seems that this is mainly a menace of the largely uncivilised and lawless Indian sub-continent; not of British.

    1. I also believe that it originated in Indian Sub-continent. Sri-Lanka seems the most affected nation. Its prevalent in Bangladesh and Pakistan as well. Strict actions are the only way to rid this from society. And when India attained 100% literacy, I hope this disappears totally.

    2. I dont know how literacy can remove ragging?!!!. Those who indulge in ragging are all already literate. :)

    3. Hmm..correct. The literacy in India has totally a different meaning. One who reads alphabets is considered as literate!. The literacy in USA has different meaning. For example in US, everyone stops at Stop sign for people to cross the roads, because they know when they cross a road one day all other drivers stop. Its like give and take, and that level literacy I meant. Many in India think US exists with great Roads, Buildings, Bridges and Airports etc. No. I have a different view. Every day morning, US exists in the collective thoughts of all americans. Its their thoughts from many decades of America, made it possible that the US what it is today. I was totally at loss with the Harvard educated FM PC's agenda, as how Economy alone would make India a better place to live!. And MMS was party to this for 10 years, no progress has made in Civility, Self-esteem, self-confidence, social behaviors etc. For example I am at odds with the Valuation of say a bank. Let's take ICICI bank. Its comparable to US banks in Valuations. But, the employees in ICICI bank possess no meaningful expertise. PC and MMS thought generating wealth using fiasco methods will make India a better place. ICICI Bank recently outsourced mailing of bank statements to NRIs to Cambodia. Its cheaper to print and mail international mails from Government of Cambodia and Vietnam postal system, because mailing from India's government postal system is 400% expensive when compared with Vietnam, Cambodia, Taiwan etc!... For every wrong upward step India goes, there will be behind the scene downward steps India goesthrough, net effect most of the times are downward.....

I suggest that the Terrorists who Ragged her be Locked for Life. They are No different from the Mumnbai attackers and are a Threat to Indias National Security

  5. Dear Sir, I like the last argument which you have made in your post - "We need not ape all practices of the British, particularly when it is bad, like ragging".

We blindly follow western culture because we feel inferior to them. Following great Indian traditions, rituals looks a shame to our young generation. We should really not forget that we have been the Golden Bird and need not to follow any bad practises of West.

After British rule, we have become habitual of following them, forgetting all about our rich heritage, history that shows how we were far ahead of the world in many-many fields. We must not forget or lose our individuality that has always kept us a step above from the world crowd.
